01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

Nestled in the heart of Fontainebleau at 23 Rue Grande, La Taverne offers a delightful blend of French culinary tradition and casual dining charm. This inviting brasserie masterfully balances a diverse menu featuring everything from quintessential French dishes to crowd-pleasing burgers and pizzas, making it a versatile spot that satisfies a wide range of palates.

Step inside La Taverne and you’re greeted by an atmosphere that’s both relaxed and welcoming—an easygoing vibe enhanced by friendly service, as noted by regulars. The ambiance is perfect for anything from a laid-back lunch to an intimate dinner, evoking the spirit of a classic French café with a modern twist.

The menu truly shines with its super fresh mussels that practically sing with oceanic freshness, paired beautifully with subtle aromatic herbs and sauces. The burgers are another standout—juicy, flavorful, and crafted with care to offer a perfect balance of textures and tastes. If pizza is what you crave, each pie is prepared with attention to detail, boasting a crispy crust and toppings bursting with freshness.

La Taverne’s appeal extends beyond just the food; it’s the authentic local charm and attentive staff that leave a lasting impression. Daria’s praise of the “really tasty burgers” and “friendly service” sums up the experience well, while Joan Hadcroft highlights the excellent value without ever compromising on quality. Even on challenging days, as Erica Martin recounts, La Taverne serves as a comforting haven—a cheerful and clean refuge ready to satisfy hunger with enthusiasm and care.

Whether you’re a Fontainebleau local looking for a cozy spot to unwind or a traveler eager to indulge in authentic French comfort food with a robust, friendly atmosphere, La Taverne delivers an experience that feels both genuine and gratifying. Don’t miss out on pairing your meal with a refreshing Pietra IPA, a favorite among regulars, and if you happen to have a furry companion, know that La Taverne welcomes four-legged friends with equal warmth.

In summation, La Taverne is more than just a restaurant—it’s a cherished neighborhood gem that embodies the spirit of Fontainebleau’s vibrant food scene. With its inviting ambiance, deliciously crafted dishes, and heartfelt service, it promises an experience that lingers—both on the palate and in your memories.

We arrived in Fontainebleau, planning to get a picnic at the outdoor marche. However, since we arrived at 3 pm on Easter Sunday, I looked around with a sinking feeling and realized everything was pretty much closed. Duh, poor planning on my part, and I had a hangry 12 year old with me. Imagine my gratitude to stumble across La Taverne, which was open, cheerful, clean, comfortable, and enthusiastically welcoming. The food isn’t spectacular, and it’s clearly a tourist spot, with a lunch menu of international comfort food, but my kid was quite happy with her pizza (fresh and tasty), and my salad with warm goat cheese (chèvre chaud) was fresh and very good. The bread was fresh and delicious. In the States, everyone would rave about this place, but in France, where the food bar is high, it’s fare is so-so. Still, it’s a great place to stop and fuel up before or after visiting the chateau, particularly for families. Full bar, but more like a modern restaurant ambience than a bar.

Nice enough place for a drink or a quick bite to eat, but better places in town.

Very nice food and quick service. The service was nice, also. Prices are OK, considering the food quality. Oh, and something that, for me, is a BIG plus: pets are allowed.
